Tyseley Energy Recovery Facility - Safe handling and destruction of clinical waste
Clinical waste has been safely handled and destroyed at Tyseley for many years via the Energy Recovery process. In 2005 we built and commissioned a new plant capable of handling certain pharmaceutical wastes.
The plant has a capacity of up to 5,000 tonnes per annum, and we take in wastes from local NHS Trusts and other clinical waste producers for destruction. We are also able to take pharmaceutical wastes and waste material that needs to be securely disposed of. We deal with major pharmaceutical companies to assist them in their requirements for secure disposal.
The site can accept waste in a variety of different ways; either in wheeled bins, containers, clip-top drums or pallets. All loads are pre-booked and weighed in prior to acceptance. All paperwork is checked and signed off and the waste is then securely held on site ready for destruction. There are fenced areas for sensitive wastes and the process is covered by a digital CCTV system that allows constant monitoring of the waste flows.
All procedures and processes are controlled under our IPPC (Integrated Pollution Control) Licence and this is strictly enforced by the Environment Agency. The gases given off by the process are fed into the main ERF plant system and therefore contribute to the Energy Recovery achieved on site.
